🐾 Meet Carrot

🚨 Foster or Adopter Needed ASAP in San Diego for Sweet, Adorable Carrot — a Kitty with the Worst Luck 🚨

We urgently need a very special foster or adopter for Carrot in San Diego. This is an emergency.

Two years ago, a sweet kitty named Carrot came into our rescue and was adopted by a woman in South Dakota. Sadly, Carrot’s human mama passed away unexpectedly last week, leaving Carrot without a home.

Her family and friends in South Dakota were saying things like, ā€œWe don’t want to euthanize her, but we can’t keep her.ā€ Seems like a veiled threat to us – and we were only given three days to figure out a cross country transport, while she was stuck in a kennel at the vet hospital. We were terrified for her.

Because of your shares, an incredible man named Sheldon who was traveling this way from South Dakota offered to transport her. Carrot made the long journey back to us and flew from Grand Rapids to San Diego, arriving late Saturday night.Ā  Apparently Carrot was a total star on her flights, getting lots of pets and attention during her layover. Sheldon said she was such a good girl!

Originally, Carrot was rescued from outside a UCLA dorm, where she was extremely dirty, skinny, and sick.

The reason Carrot was adopted out of state two years ago is because she tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV), which she likely contracted while living on the streets of Los Angeles.

There is no cure for FeLV, and it can be contagious to unvaccinated cats. The FeLV vaccine is not a core vaccine in the U.S., so cats must receive two initial vaccines and then annual boosters.

Carrot has had PCR tests every year, and she remains regressive, meaning the virus is currently inactive. In this state she is theoretically not contagious, but FeLV can activate at any time. Some cats remain healthy and regressive for many years, but when the disease activates, it can happen very quickly.

Because of this, we want to make sure Carrot always has support.

For anyone willing to adopt her, our rescue will provide $300 annually for FeLV PCR testing, and when the time eventually comes, we will also help cover the cost of helping her cross the rainbow bridge. We call this being a ā€œforever foster.ā€

We will also provide initial supplies if needed, including a cat tree, bed, litter box, scoop, food, litter, and toys.
For a foster home, we will continue to provide food and litter until she is adopted.

Right now, we urgently need either:

FOSTER (San Diego):
• A home with no other cats
• Kids and dogs are totally fine — Carrot is very brave, friendly, and affectionate
• Only cats can contract FeLV

OR

ADOPTER:
• A home with no cats, OR
• A home with a FeLV-vaccinated or FeLV-positive cat

Carrot has been around other cats before outside of our rescue, and whether she enjoys a feline friend depends on the cat.

The challenge is that we had less than 24 hours to plan, and with such short notice we don’t currently have space in the rescue to properly care for her — but we will never leave one of our kitties behind. Right now Carrot is in quarantine in a kennel, and she needs/deserves a comfortable home where she can relax. All of this stress could potentially activate the FeLV.

Carrot has had so much loss and heartbreak, yet she is still the sweetest, fluffiest little orange girl.

Please help us once again, amazing followers.
Let’s help Carrot finally get the safe, loving home she deserves. 🧔
