Meet Cane — The Sweet Boy Who Still Believes in People
Cane is a gentle, affectionate 10-month-old neutered boy who has already endured more loss and confusion than any kitten ever should — and yet, somehow, he still chooses trust, love, and connection every single day.
His Rescue Story
Cane first came into Joanne’s Furry Friends in April of 2025 along with his two brothers. Their mother had done everything in her power to keep them alive, but she had suffered a catastrophic injury — one of her legs was severely damaged from the knee down. Whether it was a coyote, a car engine, or a leg trap, no one knows. What is known is that she fought bravely for her babies until the end.
Mama got her wings.
Her boys got a chance.
Cane and his brothers were quickly socialized in rescue and soon adopted into what we believed were loving homes.
Then, heartbreak struck again.
About a week ago, Cane and his adopted sister were taken by their adopter to the El Cajon Humane Society and relinquished — something that should never have happened, as we always take our cats back. Because we don’t frequently transfer microchips, we received an alert that Cane and Miss Scarlett were at one of the Humane Society campuses.
We immediately assumed they had gotten outside and rushed to El Cajon, arriving within hours of the shelter opening. What we learned there was devastating: due to a horrifying failure in protocol, the San Diego Humane Society had illegally euthanized Miss Scarlett — despite her being tame, legally microchipped in our rescue’s name, and surrendered by someone who no longer had ownership rights.
Cane was spared.
He was scared, confused… but alive.
Now, this sweet boy needs what he has always deserved — a true forever home.
